Smell the Chiles Tostados!!

Smells can have so many different affects on us. Some make us clear the room in a hurry while holding our noses in disgust, while other make us smile and want to take an extra deep breath just to prolong the pleasure. Then there are the ones that spark memories from our past and help us re-live and cherish those moments all over again.

I love the smell of Chile Tostados (roasting green chili peppers), not only because they smell wonderful but because their smell takes me back to my childhood. I remember many a morning waking up to the smell of these little hot peppers. Every time I smell roasting chiles I think of Papa and Mama and how they would get up early in the mornings and fill our house with this fiery, bold aroma. For those familiar with the smell, you understand that an alarm clock was never needed, just one whiff is all it took to get you out of bed!=). Both my grandparents have gone on to be with the Lord and I miss them dearly. Sometimes when life gets a little hard to bear, I think of them and the missing them becomes almost unbearable that I have to roast chili peppers just to feel their presence close to me once again. I love this memory and what it does for me, I will cherish it forever. Thank you Father for the gift of chiles tostados.
So tell me, what is your favorite smell and why?

And if you think a smell is powerful, just imagine what a taste can do for you. Wish you could taste my chile macho!!! =)

I just blogged about smells too. We're harvesting peanuts and I actually anticipate and look forward to that smell every year.

I wish I could smell your chiles butmy husband has the palate of a 5 year old and we don't get to eat awesome stuff like that. Boo.

Cottonwife,
So does mine! You think after living in west, west Texas he would have aquired a taste for them. Some people just don't know what they are missing. More for me, I say! Thanks for stopping by!

My first time here. Just scouting out new blogs as I'm newly retired and am just 'wasting' some time reading. Interesting post! For me it's the smell of lilacs and lilies of the valley that invoke beautiful memories of childhood spring times - after a long harsh winter. I'm going to have to pay attention to smells again.

Your dish looks fabulous!

OH my gosh, Mere, I just read this. I have just decided what I'm going to make for dinner. Green Chile. Mom used to make chile verde con carne. I loved it. I loved it when I would smell the chiles roasting and the smell of fresh tortillas. Oh my gosh, I'm hungry now. Later, I'm going to the grocery store. Sandra the great!
